Volunteering FAQ’s

Learn about becoming a Homeward Pet Foster Family here.

Is there an age requirement?
To volunteer in the shelter and work directly with the animals, you must be at least 16 to work with cats and 18 to work with dogs.

How do I become a volunteer?
Read about our Volunteer Positions.  Then, complete our online application.  Once we process your application, you will be invited to orientation (held once a month) to learn more about volunteering with Homeward Pet, all of our volunteer positions, currently available volunteer positions and tour our shelter.

How long before I can start?
After submitting your application, it can take 1-2 months to start a regular shift. It depends on completing your training.

How long will I have to volunteer for?
The minimum is 3 months. We ask for 2 weeks notice when you decide to end your service with us. As long as you fulfill the requirements of your volunteer position, you can continue volunteering with Homeward Pet as long as you’d like. We have some volunteers that have been here for 20 years!

What can I expect before I become a volunteer?
In order to volunteer with Homeward Pet, you must complete orientation and training. Orientations are held the second Tuesday of each month at 12:30pm and 5pm. Once you have completed orientation you will be scheduled for training in your specific volunteer position. Dog care training is held on the third Tuesday of every month; cat care training is held on the fourth Tuesday of each month. .  Reception and Facilities training is on-the-job.  When you’ve completed orientation and training, and have availability that matches an open position, you will be given a specific, weekly 2-4 hour shift.   Your first two shifts will be spent with a Volunteer Mentor, receiving hands-on training and supervision from an experienced volunteer.
