For 11-year-old Sophie, Homeward Pet truly is her last hope.
When Sophie arrived at a local shelter, her future was tragically uncertain. At nearly 20 pounds, she was suffering from uncontrolled diabetes, painful mobility issues, and severe weakness in her hind legs. Overwhelmed and unable to groom herself, she was in pain and running out of time. Because of her extensive medical needs and the time it might take to normalize her life, she faced euthanasia.
When our intake team heard her story, we knew we couldn’t turn our back on her. Thanks to our in-house clinic and dedicated community, we leapt at the chance to give Sophie the life-saving time and care she deserves.
Despite everything she’s been through, Sophie is absolute joy. Her gorgeous chartreuse eyes seem to stare straight into the deepest parts of your heart. Even with a fresh haircut and limited mobility, she greets every passing staff member and volunteer with sweet, cheerful chirps. She loves playing, even if she tires out quickly, and her absolute favorite activity is a “spa day,” eagerly rolling onto her back to ask for belly brushings.
Her happy, affectionate demeanor masks a very long road to recovery.
Right now, our veterinary team is carefully managing her diabetes, running diagnostic tests for underlying conditions like thyroid disease, and providing daily physical care. We’ve designed a specialized feeding and treatment plan to safely help her reach a healthy weight, ease the painful pressure on her joints, and restore her strength so she can walk comfortably again.
Sophie is doing her part with a brave heart and endless purrs. Now, she just needs us to do ours.
Her path to health won’t be quick or easy. Managing her diabetes, investigating potential thyroid issues, and helping her safely shed weight to regain mobility will take time, extensive veterinary diagnostics, and specialized daily care.
