Volunteering FAQs

Learn about becoming a Homeward Pet Foster Family here.

Is there an age requirement?
Yes. To volunteer in the shelter and work directly with the animals, you must be at least 16 to work with cats and 18 to work with dogs. Unfortunately we do not have positions available for people under the age of 16, even with guardian supervision.

How do I become a volunteer?
Please complete our online application to start the onboarding process. You will then be invited to an online orientation (held once a month) to learn more about volunteering with Homeward Pet.

What is required to sign up as a volunteer?
Volunteers are asked to sign our volunteer agreement, consent to a Washington State Patrol background check, and attend our volunteer orientation and training.

What do I have to do before I become a volunteer?
After orientation, there are onboarding materials and general training that need to be completed by all volunteers prior to joining the program. Much of the training is online, but many assignments have mentoring or on-the-job training which will need to be completed before your first full shift. You’ll receive info on all necessary training via email (after orientation).

How much time is required?
Volunteers working in the shelter serve at least one 2-3 hour shift each week. The time spent as a foster volunteer can vary; you can learn more about our Foster Program here.

How long is the volunteer commitment?
The minimum is 3 months. We ask for 2 weeks’ notice when you decide to end your service with us.  We have some volunteers that have been here for more than 25 years!

Can I get school credit for volunteering at Homeward Pet?
Yes, as long as you notify the Volunteer Manager in advance. All standard volunteer requirements still apply. Volunteer hours are not counted until you become a volunteer, and your hours will not be signed off until you have completed your 3-month commitment. A letter of intended completion or ongoing involvement is available.

Can I receive credit for court-ordered community service for volunteering at Homeward Pet?
Yes. You must notify the Volunteer Manager of required Community Service hours in advance. All standard volunteer requirements still apply. Volunteer hours are not counted until you become a volunteer, and your hours will not be signed off until you have completed your 3-month commitment. A letter of intended completion or ongoing involvement is available.

What if there is something on my background check?
We require your Washington State Patrol record to have no convictions of violence against people or animals and be free of convictions of theft in the past 5 years. If you do not meet these requirements but wish to volunteer please contact  regarding your situation.

I have a question that’s not answered here.
