The Scoop – World Spay Day

A pile of different colored tabby kittens in a blue bed Happy World Spay Day

This is a day of hope, of working together, of education and compassion. Launched in 1995, World Spay Day is an annual campaign that aims to encourage people to save animal lives by spaying and neutering companion animals and feral cats.

At Homeward Pet, we are proponents of spay/neuter as a key solution to the challenges of pet overpopulation. All animals that leave our doors are spayed and neutered as a part of the comprehensive veterinary care that we provide while they are with us.  Over 3 million cats and dogs are still euthanized annually in shelters, due in large part, to a global inability to adequately feed and house that many animals.  Consider the costs incurred for your own pet and multiply that by 3 million. That is the burden that shelters across the United States are expected to bear.

In addition to spaying/neutering every animal in our shelter, Homeward Pet also participates in several outreach programs to help our community:

  • With our Last Litter Program, we are able to offer free spay and neuter surgeries for cats and dogs brought to our shelter with adoptable litters. Through the Last Litter Program, the adult cat or dog is be spayed or neutered at no cost, and then returned home. The kittens or puppies remain with Homeward Pet to be examined by our veterinarian, spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped before being adopted into new families. Appointments are required, and assistance is dependent on available space and resources. Learn more >>> https://www.homewardpet.org/last-litter-program/
  • Every Monday, we open our clinic doors for a public spay/neuter day where we offer low-cost spay/neuter surgeries for dogs and cats of reduced income families in our community. With the help of loyal donors, we are able to offer these services at low to no cost.

How You Can Help

When donating, you can choose to use your monetary gift to apply to the Public Spay/Neuter Fund which will help with the supplies and time for our public spay/neuter outreach services.

Your Public Spay/Neuter Clinic Sponsorship of gift of $1,000 enables Homeward Pet to help 8-10 low-income households receive high quality spay/neuter and associated services for their pets, at no cost to them.  Your thoughtful gift will sponsor one clinic-day for dogs or cats in the month following your donation. We will honor your choice of remaining anonymous or having your generosity shared on our social media channels.  Questions about making your gift?  Contact our Annual Giving Manager, Alora Knapp by email at and she’ll be happy to assist you.

During National Spay/Neuter Month, we also want to acknowledge our partners in this effort – Auburn Valley Humane Society Feral Cat Spay/Neuter Project Forgotten Dogs Rescue The Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County Seattle Area Feline Rescue Humane Society of Mason County – Washington state Spay/Neuter NW Northwest Spay & Neuter Center Seattle Humane The NOAH Center Everett Animal Shelter Kitsap Humane Society Seattle Veterinary Outreach Collectively, our goal was 3,352 spay/neuter surgeries in the month of February. If you consider an average of 6 puppies or kittens per litter, that keeps a potential of over 20K new animals from entering the shelter population this year.

#DidYouKnow

Washington license plate with a dog and cat on it. Text reads SAMPLE#DidYouKnow – that if you have the Washington Spay Neuter Adopt license plate, the dog on that plate is HPAC Alum, Laurie?

Each year nearly 150,000 cats and dogs end up in shelters across Washington. To address the pet homelessness issue at its source, the SPAY ~ NEUTER ~ ADOPT Washington license plate will help fund life changing spay/neuter surgeries. Spaying or neutering is the most humane and effective method for reducing the number of homeless pets and provides significant health and behavioral benefits as well. Reducing pet homelessness means less suffering for stray and abandoned animals, as well as fewer tax dollars spent on caring for animals in need.

When a specialty plate is purchased or renewed, $28 of the fee collected by the Department of Licensing goes directly to The Federation to be awarded quarterly to Washington animal agencies for the purpose of increasing spay/neuter services.

Last Litter Testimonial
When Melinda’s two cats became pregnant, she wanted to make sure all seven kittens received quality care and found loving homes. She also wanted to ensure that her two cats wouldn’t produce more litters.
Melinda reached out to Homeward Pet and benefited from the Last Litter Program.Homeward Pet provided Melinda’s kittens with vaccinations, spay/neuter surgeries, microchips and a clean bill of health. The mothers were spayed and returned home. We have since found loving families for all of the kittens.Melinda wrote sharing her experience with the Last Litter Program.“I took the babies in today and just wanted to tell you that everyone was so kind. I was a mess as I am very attached to the kittens, and this was extremely difficult for me. The staff were all gracious and understanding; they explained everything well and gave me comfort. You have an exceptional organization there and I am so glad you are all part of the Woodinville community.Thank you for all you do for the wonderful pets that need loving homes.~ Melinda”

Our Last Litter Program

Homeward Pet Adoption Center is working within our community to reduce pet overpopulation, help prevent unplanned litters, and ensure that every animal has a home. With our Last Litter Program, we offer free spay and neuter surgeries for cats and dogs brought to our shelter with adoptable litters. The puppies and kittens stay with us until they are adopted into new and loving homes, and the adult cat or dog goes back home to their family after surgery.

You can apply for the program using the form on our website, after which, an appointment is set for the family to be brought in. If we are unable to assist a family through our Last Litter program, we may refer them to other organizations that might be a more appropriate match for the pets.

Feral or Community Cats are cats that are not owned and are generally difficult to touch or catch.  Unfortunately, these are not animals that we can accommodate under this program.  However, we understand the urgency of getting them the spay/neuter services to keep their numbers from growing.  We recommend contacting the Feral Cat Spay/Neuter Project in Lynnwood who can provide you with information and resources beyond what we could offer.

Long haired brey cat named Ms. Furbie

Happy Tails

“It’s been almost 2 years since I adopted Ms. Furbie. She is still with me and living her best life! Seriously, I made a monster that thinks she needs two different types of treats daily.

Thank you for letting me adopt my best friend! I know that life would be worse without her and I make sure to tell her she’s my favorite being every day. I even resisted getting her a 12th man jersey for her 12th birthday because I knew she would hate it, haha! Anyways, again thank you guys for all that you do. I would have still adopted her without the senior fees waived, but I’m sure she appreciated that money going towards toys instead.

Black and tan shepherd with tongue hanging sideways out of his mouth. Text: Magnet - Adopt Me
Adopt Me

Magnet is a handsome, cuddly and playful 3-year-old Shepherd mix! Magnet is shy with new people and needs any transitions to happen slowly. But once he’s feeling comfortable, he is high energy, playful, silly and cuddly! Stuffed squeaky toys are his favorites and he’s also really into snuggling with his favorite humans. He enjoys laps and is excellent at showing you his love!

Because Magnet was living outside only, he can be easily overwhelmed in new situations and with new people. He needs an experienced adopter that can help build his confidence with positive reinforcement training and positive experiences, and be patient as he adjusts to life indoors, and in a new space with new people. Magnet does well with other dogs and will greatly benefit from having another friendly, confident dog at home.
