John L. Scott Woodinville and Homeward Pet are next-door neighbors!  Sharing a parking lot has its perks, one of which is using Homeward Pet as the landmark when giving directions to our office. Response is usually, “Oh, yes, I know where that is!” Another is observing the time and devotion Homeward Pet’s staff and volunteers spend on improving the lives of their resident dogs and cats. We support them when we can, whether it is sharing our large meeting room or participating in one of their many events (we love the Happy Tails Wine Walk)! Visiting with Homeward Pet volunteers and their dogs as they stroll by our office is a bright spot in our day!

This February Homeward Pet is celebrating 27 years of making matches!

Come and find your one and only at our Anniversary Adoption Event taking place February 25, from 12 to 6pm. For one day only, all adoptions will be $27, bettering your chances at finding the lifelong companion you’ve always dreamt of!

Homeward Pet is one of Washington State’s leading non-profit, no-kill animal shelters. Since being founded in 1990, we have united more than 27,000 cats and dogs with loving families through rescue, shelter and adoption programs.

Supporters can show their love for the animals in February with a $27 donation to the shelter! A meaningful gift of $27 can feed a litter of kittens for a week, provide a year’s worth of vaccinations for a cat, or pay for a microchip implantation and lifetime registration for a dog.

Kacy, a Homeward Pet volunteer, met Barnaby at the shelter last summer and the two immediately shared a special connection. Whenever Kacy was in the dog room, Barnaby’s eyes would light up and he would refuse to let anyone else take him for a walk!

At other times, Barnaby was extremely overwhelmed and stressed.

When Homeward Pet decided it would be in Barnaby’s best interest to be placed into foster care, Kacy and her husband Brian, volunteered. Kacy knew they could help him gain confidence and find the home he deserved.

In four months’ time Kacy and Brian helped an anxious shelter dog blossom into a devoted, trusting companion who had an unmatched love for his foster family. And the feeling was mutual. Kacy, her husband, three dogs and two cats had fallen head over heels for Barnaby.

He was their first foster dog though, and they wanted to be able to help more animals like him in the future. Initially, they were sure there was a family out there who could love him just as much.

It wasn’t until Kacy and Brian saw Barnaby featured in our “Home for the Holidays,” article last month, that reality set in. “It hit us both that he could go home with someone else and we wouldn’t see him again. It gave us that awful feeling in the pits of our stomachs,” Kacy says.

They knew they couldn’t let Barnaby go. They needed him just as much as he needed them.

Though adding another member to an already full house meant they’d no longer have room to foster, it was a sacrifice worth making.

On January 6, Barnaby was officially welcomed to the family. Today, Barnaby goes for hikes, scenic car rides and romps around the yard with his sisters. Barnaby and Kacy have an unbreakable bond and he’s never more than a few feet from her side. “He’s had four different homes in four years. He needs stability, love and safety, and I don’t want to let him down,” Kacy says.

Thanks to a caring foster family, Barnaby has found the loving home he’s always deserved, one he’ll never have to leave.

We have just added the Snohomish Community Food Bank to our network of partners.  The Homeward Pet Food Bank now distributes pet food and supplies to 7 area food banks, and other community organizations, helping 1000 families per week care for their pets and keep them in their homes.

Last year, the Homeward Pet Food Bank distributed over 110,000 pounds of food to local food banks and animal rescues, thanks to the generous support of donors, and the tireless efforts of our volunteers and the food bank workers.
